RPO & RTO

How much data can you lose? How long can you wait?

Two questions turn backup settings into business requirements: your Recovery Point Objective and Recovery Time Objective.

RPO — Data loss tolerance

If backups run nightly, a failure late in the day could put many hours of changes at risk. Ask how much work the business can afford to recreate.

RTO — Downtime tolerance

A backup may be recoverable yet still take too long. Ask how long each critical service can remain unavailable before the impact becomes unacceptable.

Not every system needs the same target.

Prioritize workloads. A domain controller, line-of-business application, file server and archive may all have different recovery requirements.

STOP GUESSING. START KNOWING.
